One formula, five everyday problems — exam marks, shopping discounts, restaurant tips, sales tax, and growth rates. Mental-math shortcuts plus a free calculator for the messy ones.
Percentages cause more everyday arithmetic mistakes than any other piece of math — partly because schools teach the formula but rarely the intuition, partly because every percentage problem looks slightly different. The truth is there's one formula behind every percentage calculation, and once you internalise it, every problem — marks, discounts, tips, tax, growth, interest, anything — collapses into a simple plug-in. This guide covers the formula, five worked real-world examples, the mental-math shortcuts that make them feel easy, and the one calculator that handles the messy edge cases.
Every percentage question is really one of three variants of a single relationship:
part / whole × 100 = percentOr rearranged:
Find the percent: part ÷ whole × 100
Find the part: whole × percent ÷ 100
Find the whole: part ÷ percent × 100
That's it. Every example below is just this formula with different labels. When you want to skip the arithmetic, the Tooloogle Percentage Calculator answers all three variants in one screen.
You scored 487 out of 600 on a board exam. What's your percentage?
487 ÷ 600 × 100 = 81.17%Mental-math shortcut: round the whole to a friendly number. 600 is close to 500, and 487/500 = 97.4%, so 487/600 must be smaller than that — somewhere around 81%. The mental check stops you from typing a digit wrong and reporting 18% by accident.
For percentages off uncommon denominators (787 out of 920?), don't bother with mental math — use the calculator and get back to your day.
A jacket is priced at ₹3,500 with a 35% discount. What's the final price?
Discount amount = 3500 × 35 ÷ 100 = 1225
Final price = 3500 - 1225 = 2275Mental-math shortcut: 35% off means you pay 65%. 65% of 3500 is 35 + 30 = 65... easier: 10% of 3500 is 350, so 65% is 6.5 × 350 = 2275. Same answer in three seconds.
For multi-step discounts (10% off, then an extra 20% off the discounted price), order matters and mental math gets risky. Use the Discount Calculator for those.
Dinner bill: ₹2,840. You want to tip 15% and split four ways.
Tip = 2840 × 15 ÷ 100 = 426
Total = 2840 + 426 = 3266
Per person = 3266 ÷ 4 = 816.50Mental-math shortcut for 15%: take 10% (just move the decimal: 284), then add half of that (142). 284 + 142 = 426. Works for any 15% tip in your head, in any currency, in two seconds.
For weird tip percentages (18.5%, 22%, or splitting unequally) the Tip Calculator with Split handles it instantly.
A laptop costs ₹58,000 + 18% GST. What's the total payable?
Tax = 58000 × 18 ÷ 100 = 10440
Total = 58000 + 10440 = 68440Now the trickier reverse: you paid ₹68,440 inclusive of 18% GST. What was the pre-tax price?
Pre-tax = 68440 ÷ 1.18 = 58000This is the calculation people get wrong most often. The instinct is to subtract 18% from 68,440 (getting 56,121) — but that's removing 18% of the inclusive price, not the original. The correct move is to divide by 1.18. The same applies to any inclusive-tax-back-out problem.
The Percentage Calculator has a dedicated "find the original" mode that handles this without you having to remember the division trick.
Your portfolio rose from ₹100,000 to ₹125,000. What's the growth rate?
Growth = (125000 - 100000) ÷ 100000 × 100 = 25%The next year, it fell from 125,000 back to 100,000. What's the loss rate?
Loss = (100000 - 125000) ÷ 125000 × 100 = -20%Notice: a 25% gain followed by a 20% loss leaves you exactly where you started — the percentages aren't symmetric because the base changes between calculations. This is the single most common source of intuition errors in personal finance. A 50% loss requires a 100% gain to recover, not a 50% gain.
For investment-growth math over multiple years, the Compound Interest Calculator handles the compounding correctly — mental percentage math fails fast once you stack more than one period.
10% of anything — move the decimal one place left. 10% of 487 is 48.7.
1% of anything — move the decimal two places left. 1% of 487 is 4.87.
5% of anything — take 10% and halve it.
15% of anything — take 10% and add half. (The classic tip shortcut.)
20% of anything — take 10% and double it. (For a 20% off sale or a 20% tip.)
25% of anything — divide by 4. "What's 25% of 800?" → 200.
50% of anything — halve it.
75% of anything — halve it, then halve that, and add them. Or: subtract 25%.
"X% of Y = Y% of X" — the commutative trick. 18% of 50 = 50% of 18 = 9. Try 4% of 75 in your head, then try 75% of 4 (= 3). Same answer, second one is instant.
Mental math is great for sanity-checking. For anything you'll act on with real money — loan offers, tax filings, investment comparisons, business pricing — use the calculator. The error rate of human mental arithmetic on three-or-more-step percentage problems is too high to risk.
The Tooloogle Percentage Calculator covers all three variants of the formula in one screen. For the specialised cases — tips, discounts, compound interest — the focused tools (Tip Calculator, Discount Calculator, Compound Interest Calculator) handle the edges you'd otherwise have to remember.
part ÷ whole × 100 = percent. Every percentage question is one of three rearrangements of that formula — find the percent, find the part, or find the whole.
Divide your marks by the total possible marks and multiply by 100. For example, 487 out of 600 = 487 ÷ 600 × 100 = 81.17%. Use the Percentage Calculator for instant results.
Divide the discounted price by (1 minus the discount as a decimal). A 35% discount means you paid 65%, so original = paid ÷ 0.65. The Discount Calculator does this both ways automatically.
Yes — this is the classic asymmetry of percent change. The 25% gain is on the original base; the 20% loss is on the new, larger base. They cancel exactly. A 50% loss requires a 100% gain to recover, not a 50% gain.
For an 18% GST included in a final price, divide the final price by 1.18 to get the pre-tax amount. For an 18% GST added on top, multiply the pre-tax price by 1.18. Don't subtract 18% from the inclusive total — that gives the wrong answer.
