Discount calculator for percent-off offers. Enter the original price and discount percentage to compare the savings and price after discount.
The Discount Calculator shows the discount amount, savings, and price after a percentage reduction. Enter the original price and discount percentage, then compare the result with the offer you are checking.
Check shipping, taxes, and any exclusions separately before treating the result as your checkout total.
A "30% off" offer on a 79.99-priced item is easier to compare when you can see the money saved and the price after discount. The shortcut "round to 80, take 10% = 8, multiply by 3 = 24 off, so about 56 final" is an estimate.
For offers such as "25% off this" and "buy one get one half off that", check which items and quantities qualify before comparing totals.
Results: discount amount, savings, and price after discount. The discount amount and savings describe the same reduction.
Live updates: results refresh as you type in either field; no "Calculate" button.
Rounded results: amounts are shown to two decimal places.
Color-coded results: discount in red (the amount subtracted), savings in green (the amount you keep), price after discount in blue. Extra charges are separate.
Decimal-friendly inputs: price field accepts decimals down to the cent; discount field accepts fractional percentages (e.g. 12.5%).
Check the range: use 0-100% for a standard percent-off offer. A 110% discount would imply a negative price, so check the offer and inputs.
Enter the original price (the sticker / list / pre-discount price) in the "Original Price" field.
Enter the discount percentage in the "Discount" field (e.g. 30 for "30% off", 12.5 for "12.5% off").
Read the three results: discount amount (in red), what you save (in green), and final price (in blue).
Compare offers by changing the inputs: for two competing deals, run the numbers for each and pick the lower final price.
Use the calculator at the till or while browsing online to verify the discount displayed matches what was advertised.
A "40% off" tag takes a price from 89.99 down to 53.99 (89.99 × 0.6 = 53.994 ≈ 53.99). Compare the rounded result with the price shown by the seller.
For a 20% off coupon plus a 10% storewide sale, apply 10% first, then calculate 20% off that result if the terms allow both discounts. A "30% off" offer and a flat "25 off" offer need separate calculations for the item you are buying.
The two formulas the calculator uses:
Discount amount: amount = (original_price × discount_percent) / 100. Example: 30% off a price of 79.99 = (79.99 × 30) / 100 = 24.00 (rounded). This is the money value of the discount.
Final price: final = original_price − discount_amount. Equivalently, final = original_price × (1 − discount_percent / 100). Example: 79.99 − 24.00 = 55.99 final.
Savings and discount amount are the same reduction: "you save 24" and "the discount is 24" refer to the same value.
Two discounts of 20% each don't equal a 40% discount: they equal a 36% discount. The first 20% reduces the price to 80% of original; the second 20% reduces that to 80% of 80% = 64% of original, meaning a 36% total discount. To compute stacked discounts, apply them sequentially: first discount on the original to get the intermediate price, then second discount on the intermediate to get the final. Some retailers explicitly add discounts ("extra 10% off already-reduced items, taking total off to 50%"); always read the fine print to know whether discounts are additive or multiplicative. The Tooloogle calculator handles one discount at a time; for stacked discounts, run it twice with the intermediate result as the second "original price".
Compare the total cost of the same items, not just the percentage. Saving 40 on a 200-priced item (20% off) is a larger reduction than saving 30 on a 50-priced item (60% off), but the purchases still cost different amounts.
Include shipping and check how the seller applies tax and discounts. For two equally priced qualifying items, BOGO 50% off = 25% effective discount on a pair; BOGO free = 50% effective discount on a pair. Check the qualifying items and promotion terms before applying either comparison.
For very small discounts (under 5%), extra charges may outweigh the saving.
Use the Percentage Calculator for other percentage questions or the Tip Calculator for a restaurant bill. Keep the discount calculation separate from any extra charges.
